A.O Recovery covers the M18 between junctions 1 and 2 — the stretch running from the M1 at Thurcroft across towards the A1(M) — 24 hours a day. Ring 07394 784531 with your junction number and direction of travel, once everyone is out of the vehicle and behind the barrier.

Before you ring

Get safe first

On a motorway this order matters more than anything else on this page. Make the call once you and your passengers are behind the barrier.

  1. Get off the carriageway if you can

If the vehicle is still moving, pull as far left as you can, onto the hard shoulder, a lay-by or a verge. On a motorway, use an emergency refuge area if one is close.

  2. Hazards on, sidelights in the dark

Put the hazard warning lights on straight away. If it is dark or visibility is poor, leave the sidelights on too so approaching traffic sees you early.

  3. Get everyone out on the left, behind a barrier

Leave the vehicle by the left-hand doors and wait behind a barrier or up the verge, well back from the traffic. Do not sit in the car on a live carriageway.

  4. Ring 07394 784531 with your exact location

Read out the nearest marker post, junction number, road name or what3words. The more exact the location, the faster we get to you and the straighter the ETA we can give you.

Recovery on the M18

Do this before you ring. Hard shoulder if you still have movement, hazards on, everyone out through the left-hand doors and behind the barrier. Then ring 07394 784531 with the junction number and the direction you were heading.

The M18 starts where it leaves the M1 at junction 32 and runs east past Thurcroft and Bramley. Junction 1 is the A631 turn for Maltby and Rotherham, and junction 2 takes you on towards the A1(M). It is a short, fast stretch and it sits almost on top of the base, which makes it one of the quickest call-outs on the whole patch.

Because it is the link between the M1 and the A1(M), a lot of the traffic on it is people a long way from home. If your car is not going anywhere and you do not know the area, say so — where the vehicle should end up is a decision we can help you make on the phone.

Whatever has happened, it is one of the eight things on the service list — most often a straight recovery, a jump start or a winch pull-out.

Good to know

the M18 questions

How quickly can you reach the M18?
The M18 junction 1 stretch is only a few miles from the Rotherham base, which makes it one of the fastest call-outs on the patch. Ring 07394 784531 with the junction number and direction once you and your passengers are safely behind the barrier.
I am a long way from home and my car is not going anywhere.
Common on this road, because it is the link between the M1 and the A1(M). Tell us on the phone and we will talk through the options — a local garage, somewhere secure to leave it, or a longer transport run home, quoted before anything moves.
Do you cover the M1 as well?
Yes, junctions 29 to 36, both directions. The M18 and that stretch of the M1 meet at junction 32, and both are everyday coverage 24 hours a day.
