On a motorway this order matters more than anything else on this page. Make the call once you and your passengers are behind the barrier.
Get off the carriageway if you can
If the vehicle is still moving, pull as far left as you can, onto the hard shoulder, a lay-by or a verge. On a motorway, use an emergency refuge area if one is close.
Hazards on, sidelights in the dark
Put the hazard warning lights on straight away. If it is dark or visibility is poor, leave the sidelights on too so approaching traffic sees you early.
Get everyone out on the left, behind a barrier
Leave the vehicle by the left-hand doors and wait behind a barrier or up the verge, well back from the traffic. Do not sit in the car on a live carriageway.

Recovery on the M1
Do this before you ring. Get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency refuge area if the vehicle still moves. Hazard lights on. Everyone out through the left-hand doors, up the banking and behind the barrier — not sat in the car, and not standing between the car and the traffic. Then ring 07394 784531 and say the junction number and which way you were heading.
This stretch of the M1 runs right past the base. Junctions 33, 34 and 35 are the Rotherham and Sheffield section, 32 is where the M18 splits off, 30 and 29 take you down past Barlborough and Chesterfield, and 36 is the northern edge of the patch. All of it is normal coverage, day or night.
If you are on a smart motorway section with no hard shoulder, get to an emergency refuge area if you can reach one. If you cannot, and you are stuck in a live lane, ring 999 first — that is the one situation where the recovery call is the second call, not the first.
